This past week in ISM I had another mentor visit with Dr. Cain where I got to talk about my original work plans and more about certain events that were happening in the office.

First, Dr. Cain mentioned how a rep was coming to Texas Facial Aesthetics in order to promote a new brand of resilient hyaluronic acid (RHA). I had previously researched hyaluronic acid (HA) as a type of filler and learned that it was a natural component of the skin. HA filler is also the most common type of filler but it is not permanent due to the fact that it can be broken down by the skin. What was really interesting to me was what Dr. Cain said about the RHA. He discussed how the RHA had longer hyaluronic acid chains which makes it more similar to normal HA so it would be more effective for areas with lots of movement like under the eyes and in the nasolabial folds. After he told me they were more similar to normal HA, I asked him if this would cause the RHA to not last as long as the HA. However, Dr. Cain told me that the rep claimed that it would still last as long as typical HA. Overall, it was very informative to get to talk to Dr. Cain about this new perspective and about reps taking the steps in order to talk to plastic surgeons about new fillers on the market.

In addition to the reps, I also talked to Dr. Cain about my original work idea and how I wanted to represent both the surgical and nonsurgical ways to operate on different noses. This conversation led to a discussion about the surgical rhinoplasty where Dr. Cain talked to me about how the rhinoplasty surgery is performed as well as certain tools that are used on the nasal components like nasal rasps and an osteotome. I also got to view a small portion of a clip that demonstrated how a nose is shaved down. These resources as well as the additional information I gathered will definitely help me in my production of a great original work in the future where my knowledge about rhinoplasty can be applied in the best way possible.
